The Chemistry Gift Box

This box was ordered as a graduation gift for a chemistry major. It took me about an hour refresher for my college chemistry classes to finally make it possible to create the molecules requested. Thankfully I still have my college text books. There is a molecule of caffeine and one for Rum. The third image requested what a simplified Atom.

The wood used was Texas Pecan. Each board was hand picked from a local saw mill to match in color and grain. I cut the panel so that the grain was continuous all the way around the box’s sides. The base and lid were cut to mirror each other when seen from the top or bottom.

The lid was mounted to sit below the sides with hinges that would hold the lid open handsfree. The handle is magnetic spring loaded latch that pops the lid up so that fingers can lift it the rest of the way. Finally the underside of the lid has encouraging messages from the customer to the recipient. I used Mod-podge to not only attach and seal the notes, but to also finish the whole box. The satin finish allowed for a wonderful view of the wood grain.

As always Pictures of the progress are below as well. Enjoy.
